Now that the holidays are coming to a close and a new year is starting, it may seem like there is nothing fun or exciting to look forward to until the next round of celebrations. But here in Asheville, there is always something going on! And this is the best time of year in which to explore the city; many people wait to visit until the weather is warmer, so it’s less crowded now.

Plus, if you reserve a suite with us for 3 days or more, we’ll give you $10 off each night of your reservation! Use the code JANUARY10 when you book your stay.

Already in town? We’ve got a list of goings-on for New Year’s Eve and Day, as well as a peek at more events happening this month.

New Year’s Eve

Grove Arcade - Welcome a new century of “Roaring Twenties” with flappers, live jazz, and cocktails inspired by the 20th-century’s decade of excess. The speakeasy-style party is $40 per person and takes place Dec. 31 from 7-10 p.m.

Battery Park Book Exchange - Wear your finest black-and-white attire and matching masks to the Black & White Gala, reminiscent of Truman Capote’s Party of the Century in 1966. Enjoy a toast at midnight, live jazz all night, and a breakfast buffet after midnight. Admission is $110 per person or $200 per couple. The fun starts at 9 p.m.

Antidote Cocktail Lounge - Enjoy a Roaring ‘20s Revival at the South Slope speakeasy with special cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and champagne. Tickets are $50, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Asheville Humane Association.

Storm Rhum Bar and Bistro - Join Storm for their Masquerade Party with 2 different seatings, each featuring a 3-course prix fixe menu and champagne. The first seating is at 5 p.m., and the second starts at 8; reservations are required, and prices vary from $75 per person to $175. General admission to the party only (beginning at 10 p.m.) is $80 and includes full bar service, small bites, dancing, and champagne.

Thirsty Monk - The Biltmore Park location of the local microbrewery will drop a golden keg at midnight. Then, they tap the keg of Must Love Coconut IPA. It will be a luau-inspired party before and after the keg drops, starting at 5 p.m.

Off the Wagon - The dueling piano bar is bringing in the new year with a celebration featuring party favors, appetizers, and a ball drop and champagne toast at midnight, all for a $20 cover charge. It all starts at 7 p.m. and reservations are recommended.

Pack’s Tavern - The downtown restaurant is offering two ways to celebrate the new year. The Countdown to 2020 will feature drink specials, a live band, and dancing beginning at 8 p.m. for $20 at the door. The Century Room will feature a more upscale and elegant evening of dinner, dancing, and drinks for $125 per person. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Biltmore in January

Another plus of visiting Asheville during January is that the price of admission to Biltmore drops to its lowest all year. It’s a great time to take advantage of all the estate has to offer.

Candlelight Evenings - You can still catch Biltmore by the light of candles, lit fireplaces, and luminaries during Candlelight Christmas Evenings until Jan. 4. The estate will also still be decorated for Christmas until then, in case you didn’t make it before Christmas.

Downton Abbey: The Exhibition - There’s still time to visit with the Crawleys and their servants at Biltmore. The touring Downton Abbey exhibit is still on the grounds and features costumes, re-creations of the sets, and exclusive multimedia features from the PBS hit until April.

More January Fun

The North Carolina Arboretum - Another popular attraction during the winter holidays is the Winter Lights display at the Arboretum, and it continues until January 4. More than a half-million lights festoon the landscapes and displays, creating bright winter nights throughout the gardens. The lights turn on at 6 p.m., and are shut off at 10. Reservations are highly recommended.

Asheville Fringe Arts Festival - In keeping with the “Keep Asheville Weird” spirit, this annual festival brings local and national artists to town in an exploration of the fringes of the arts world. Expect to see performance art, dancing, installations, puppetry, and more on display at various venues around the city. Follow the link for a full schedule of events from January 19 - 26.

Winterfest Beer Festival - Although it’s about an hour-and-a-half north of Asheville, Beech Mountain is the highest point in eastern America. It’s host to a mountain ski resort and village, as well as this beer festival that will serve up 50 beers and ciders from North Carolina breweries on January 11. Take some ski or snowboarding gear and enjoy a day of fun and relaxing; the beer flows from 4-8 p.m.

Big Band Dance Weekend - Swing-dance yourself warm at this annual event at the Grove Park Inn January 10-12. The legendary Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra will play the Big Band hits each day, as well as different bands and musicians.
