The Biltmore Estate is taking guests back in time to when the house was host to the guests of the Vanderbilts with “A Vanderbilt House Party: The Gilded Age” exhibit,  featuring clothing and behind-the-scenes stories of actual events

The clothing has been re-constructed using black-and-white photos of the Vanderbilts and their friends as inspiration. As in previous exhibits which showcased clothing of the time period when the Vanderbilts lived in the home, the “Vanderbilt House Party” garments will be placed throughout the house. The accompanying optional audio tour features stories as told by the dressed characters - both guests and employees of the house.

The costumes were created by Oscar®-winning costume designer John Bright, using more than 100 photos in the family’s collection. In addition to the clothing, Bright and his crew also duplicated hairstyles and accessories of the late-19th and early-20th centuries for authenticity. Some details include antique lace, hand-sewn beadwork, and embroidery.

Other Events

Several other events are planned around the theme of “The Gilded Age”. A Champagne Cellar Wine Dinner will take place on Feb. 23 and feature a 7-course meal and Biltmore wines for $125 per person. A separate, hour-long “Biltmore House Revealed Tour” is offered to show guests the home’s archives, explain some of the preservation efforts undergone at the house, as well as a tour some of the unrestored rooms of the home. The tour is $25, in addition to the cost of house admission.
