The month November kicks off the holiday season here in Asheville, NC and with that comes many family friendly activities. From Christmas lights to incredible art displays this town has just what you need to get into the holiday spirit. So come join in the cheer at the Residences at Biltmore!
Christmas at Biltmore
Amerce yourself in holiday tradition when you visit during Christmas at Biltmore. This magical event begins on November 3rd and last through January 7th. The Biltmore will be adorned with traditional holiday décor including over 50 uniquely hand-decorated Christmas trees, garland, and oversized wreaths. For an extraordinary Biltmore experience schedule a Candlelight Tour to get a sense of what it was like to celebrate Christmas evenings by one of the homes’ many fireplaces. Polar Express Train
The Polar Express is taking over the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad beginning November 10th through December 31st. This event is inspired by the classic book The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg which was later transformed into a well-known animated movie. During the hour and a half train ride you can relax in your favorite Christmas jammies while enjoying cookies and hot cocoa. There will even be a special visit from Santa once you arrive at the “North Pole.” This is a memorable trip for children of all ages. Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum
The North Carolina Arboretum already radiates beauty from their pristine gardens but between November 17th and December 31st the grounds shine even brighter. As you meander through the property you will see over 500,000 LED lights that make up many different displays and designs. Some are even synced to some your favorite holiday tunes! This is an outdoor display so dress accordingly. You can always purchase a cup of hot cocoa or cider to help warm you up along with other food and beverage items. Holiday Parade in Downtown Asheville
On November 18th some of the streets in downtown Asheville will be blocked off for the Holiday Parade that starts at 11:00am. This is the 70th year of the parade and will showcase 100 entries sporting the theme Light Up the Holidays! The parade route will include Biltmore Avenue from Charlotte Street to Pack Square and then turns onto Patton Avenue to end on French Broad Street so be sure to plan ahead to get a good view.
Gingerbread House Competition
The 24th Annual National Gingerbread House Competition is hosted at The Omni Grove Park Inn and open to the public beginning November 26th – January 4th. This popular event displays amazing editable art pieces. The entries are judged on 5 different criteria including appearance, originality, difficulty, precision, and consistency of theme and the main structure must be mostly gingerbread material. Many of the entries aren’t houses at all! There have been animal and nature scenes, castles, Santas, and many other items made out of gingerbread. You never know what you might see this year!
